Programs and Services

Hippotherapy

Hippotherapy is a physical, occupational, or speech therapy treatment strategy utilizing the movement of the therapy horse to achieve functional goals. Hippotherapy is guided by a medical treatment plan and is facilitated by a licensed physical, occupational, or speech therapist. This form of therapy has been proven to positively impact the rider’s core strength, flexibility, balance, and cognitive skills.

Sensory Arena

To enhance the sensory experiences inherently offered by Therapeutic Riding and Hippotherapy, the Sensory Arena provides a broader range of sensory input and associated cognitive/language processes. Using the Sensory Arena causes multiple sensory systems in our bodies (Vision, Tactile, Vestibular, Proprioception, Kinesthetic) to interact, resulting in a variety of desired behaviors.

Therapeutic Riding

Therapeutic Riding (TR) is an equine assisted activity involving traditional riding disciplines and/or adaptive riding for the purpose of contributing positively to the cognitive, physical, emotional and social well-being of individuals with special needs. Benefits range from improvement in balance, strength and coordination to better self-awareness, confidence, and social interactions. As part of the TR program, InStride has its own Equestrian Team that practices regularly and participates in Special Olympics Florida.

Equine Assisted Learning

Equine Assisted Learning is an experiential approach that encompasses both Equine Facilitated Learning (EFL) and Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy (EFP). EAL promotes the development of life skills and is designed to help individuals achieve their unique educational, professional, and personal goals. Benefits often seen include improvements in confidence, self-awareness, communication, trust, problem solving, and critical thinking, as well as reducing stress and encouraging relationship building.

EFL:Promotes the development of life skills for educational, professional and personal goals through a planned learning experience, integrating equine assisted activities.

EFP:Promotes the personal exploration of feelings and behaviors that allows for the clinical interpretation of such, using equine assisted activities and therapies that are guided by a treatment plan created by a mental health professional.

Day At The Barn

Day at The Barn is a program designed to engage individuals with special needs to promote the development and improvement of specific life skills and to reinforce daily living skills. This program can be delivered either on-site at our facility, or we can bring the program to you. This two-hour program offers opportunities to participate in a tour of our facility, learning about horses, meeting and interacting with a horse or two, and a special craft project.

Employment Skill Building

The Employment/Volunteer Skill Building program is an experiential learning approach designed to engage individuals with disabilities and to assist them with developing skills that will prepare them for employment or volunteering. This program takes place weekly for twelve weeks and includes topics and activities such as filling out an application, following directions, completing tasks, developing good communication skills, and proper conduct in a work environment. At the end of twelve weeks, participants will be treated to a graduation ceremony with diplomas and celebration of their accomplishments. Current participants include Loveland Center and United Cerebral Palsy.

Literacy Program: Reading with Little Red & Friends

Our Literacy Program is approved by the Sarasota County School Board and is designed to promote a love for reading for K-1 school age children. Partnering with Sarasota County Schools—The SunCoast Campaign for Grade Level Reading, this program can be delivered either through a school field trip to our facility, or InStride will deliver our literacy program off- site. During this two-hour program, children will participate in activities such as learning about horses, grooming a horse, taking a virtual trail ride, doing a craft, and reading a book to one of our special therapy horses.
